The country was stunned this week when news broke of a far-reaching college admissions scandal. At the center of the allegations was the news that both Huffman and Loughlin had bribed their way into garnering a select college admission for their children. Both actresses will appear in court later this month.
It would appear as is Loughlin faces the more serious charges. The former “Full House” actress is charged with felony conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud. This allegation can be especially damaging to Loughlin, who has built her Hollywood reputation playing wholesome characters. She got her start as Aunt Becky in “Full House” before moving on to being a staple in various feel-good movies on the Hallmark Channel.
The Hallmark Channel made the move to cut ties with Loughlin on Thursday amidst the swirling controversy. Loughlin’s daughter, Olivia Jade, also was dropped from her advertising partnership with cosmetics giant Sephora. Olivia Jade is a YouTube personality who has built a reputation with over one million followers.
The 19-year-old started USC last fall after Loughlin paid $250,000 to have her admitted under the guise that she was a rower. Despite staged pictures of her on a rowing machine, Olivia Jade had never competed in crew. Loughlin and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, paid an additional $250,000 to have another daughter admitted to USC under the same circumstances.
Huffman has been accused of sending $15,000 to a fake charity set up by ringleader William Singer. The money was directed to enable cheating on Huffman’s daughter’s SAT scores.
As a former star on “Desperate Housewives” and the wife to William H. Macy, Huffman has a solid reputation in Hollywood. Whether or not Huffman and Loughlin will be able to recover from this public relations nightmare remains to be seen. Although Hollywood has a short memory when it comes to their beloved stars, the depth of this scandal might be too much for these actresses to overcome.
