**Updated 6/18/19**: the company is set to release a new boxed packaging for Waiakea water on June 24th, 2019.
There are several reasons why more and more people are turning to drinking bottled water instead of tap water. Whether it be taste, quality, or accessibility, bottled water can be a safe alternative to the water that is coming out of faucets. On the surface, that does sound like a good plan. But there are certain things that you need to be aware of when it comes to purchasing bottled water.
Despite what you may think, not all bottled water is created equal. The water that is in bottled water may not come from the source you probably imagine it comes from. “Alkaline Water,” for example, may actually just be normal tap water that has been run through a machine to give it its pH.
Before you choose your bottled water brand, be certain that you do the research to verify that the company’s water is, indeed, coming from the source it implies it is being taken from. If you are paying a premium for the company’s bottled water, then be sure to hold them accountable.
Waiakea Water stands strongly behind its product. Its bottled water is perhaps the best on the market. While there are lots of brands of bottled water available on the market today, none of them are quite like Waiakea Water.
Sticking with a brand like Waiakea will provide you with a peace of mind that many other bottled water brands can’t match. And once again, if you are spending a pretty penny on bottled water, you need a guarantee that the water is coming from a quality source.
One unique feature of Waiakea’s water is the water’s alkalinity. We do not often consider the way pH affects our bodies, but highly acidic foods and drinks can wreck havoc on our health if we are not careful. Knowing the pH of the water we drink every day is important when it comes to maintaining proper cellular and tissue health.
pH works on a scale from 0 to 14. The lower a number on the pH scale is, the more acidic the substance. The higher the number on the pH scale, the more alkaline the substance. 0 is completely acidic, 14 is completely alkaline, and 7 is neutral. Different parts of the body maintain a different pH balance, and that is completely normal. Overall, our body needs to maintain a relatively neutral pH of 7.4 in order to be healthy and ward off disease.
It is interesting to note that starting at a pH level of 5.5, certain beverages can begin to eat away at your teeth through demineralization. There are many drinks that you probably consume on a daily basis that cause destruction to your teeth and can hurt your body as well.
Tomato juice, for example, is slightly over 4 on the pH scale. But compared to other beverages you are consuming, tomato juice is the least of your worries. Most sodas have a pH ranging from 2.5 to 3.5, which can affect your health greatly. Everyone knows that vinegar is very acidic, but even that has a pH rating about the same as sodas.
You probably mistakenly believe that bottled water comes in at a pH level of about 7, meaning it is completely neutral. Many people make this assumption, but the truth is that is not the case. Bottled water has quite a range when it comes to pH levels. When shopping for a bottle of water at the grocery store, you are more than likely going to stumble upon a water which is acidic. That is because most brands range from 4-7 on the pH scale. If you are a fan of flavored water, and many people are since it provides a little punch to the flavorless liquid, these beverages can often register in the 3 to 4 range on the pH level.
However, Waiakea has a new theory when it comes to pH. Waiakea’s sustainably sourced bottled waters have a natural alkaline pH of 8.2. This ensures that bottled Waiakea water stays out of the acidic range and provides the body with numerous benefits that you would not usually get with other bottled water brands.
A Unique Approach to Water
We have already covered why Waiakea is hardly an average bottled water company. Waiakea stands behind the quality product it offers the world. The company doesn’t just sustainably source the water themselves, but it is involved in multiple global sustainability efforts that provide valuable drinking water to certain regions of the globe which desperately need it. The company also donates much of its water. More and more companies are making it their mission to help the environment and the people in it. Waiakea is helping to lead the way.
Ryan Emmons, CEO and founder of Waiakea, first created the bottled water brand in 2012.
Emmons grew up in, arguably, two of the most beautiful states in the United States, California and Hawaii. Surrounded by the beauty of nature during his childhood, Ryan Emmons developed a deep appreciation for the environment and healthy, clean living.
The idea for Waiakea originated while Ryan Emmons was near a bountiful water source near the base of a volcano in Hawaii that was basically in his uncle’s backyard. Once he tasted it, he felt it was the best-tasting water he had ever had, and he was ready to bet that others would agree with him.
Once out of college, Ryan Emmons decided to take a risk and follow his dream. This is how he discusses the inception of Waiakea:
“This, and having worked on charitable efforts in Africa, led me to begin developing the concept for Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water after discovering my family there had access to one of the most naturally healthy, pure, and sustainable water sources in the world.”
Waiakea is on track to change the CPG industry from within as the first certified CarbonNeutral bottled water in the U.S. and triple bottom line company.
Waiakea is a naturally alkaline water, and the first Hawaiian volcanic water that uses a unique process of filtration. Waiakea water goes through 14,000 feet of porous volcanic rock through the Mauna Loa volcano. Using nature as a filter is quite the correct thing to do for a company that prides itself on using the environment the right way.
The naturally alkaline water is one of the first Hawaiian waters coming from the Mauna Loa, where it rains 360 out of 365 days in the year. It is one of the rainiest places on earth. But because of that, there is a constant supply of water available.
The water at the volcano is always flowing instead of remaining stagnant in an aquifer. Many brands make general claims that they offer fresh water, but Waiakea is very transparent in where the company gets the water that goes into its bottles. Waiakea becomes alkaline through the process of filtering through volcanic rock, which leaves it packed with minerals, such as magnesium and calcium.
In Hawaiian, Mauna Loa means “long mountain” and Waiakea means “broad waters.” The marriage of these two terms seems like a natural fit. This volcano is a prominent and ancient figure in Hawaii and is the planet’s most active volcano. Mauna Loa is, in fact, just one of the five volcanoes that form the island of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. Hawaii is always considered one of the top states in protecting the environment, and that makes it the perfect place to house Waiakea.
Mauna Loa is 33,000 feet above the sea floor, which actually makes it the tallest mountain in the world when measured from base to top. The rock in Mauna Loa could fill the Grand Canyon 18 times. In fact, it is the second largest volcano in the world.
Hawaii was formed over thousands and maybe even millions of years from underwater volcanoes continually erupting. This resulted with the island eventually being formed once the magma reached the ocean surface.
Filtering Waiakea water through a volcano is putting nature’s resources to good use. And because of that unique process, Waiakea water has life-altering benefits that could potentially improve a person’s health. Incorporating it into your diet and lifestyle could lead to positive changes involving your health and fitness.
The Benefits of Alkaline Water
Alkaline water has been documented to help improve one’s health in a variety of ways. The Annals of Otology Rhinology, and Laryngology – a medical journal – found that drinking water with a pH of 8.2 instead of the typical acidic bottled water can actually greatly reduce symptoms of acid reflux when used in conjunction with physician treatment. In fact, traditionally acidic bottled water was proven to be ineffective in acid reflux treatment because the human-produced pepsin only reacts in the presence of acid. Therefore, the hydrogen in bottled water combined with the acidic pH has no benefit to acid reflux, unlike the alkaline water in Waiakea.
Alkaline water like Waiakea can actually help neutralize stomach acid because alkaline water naturally has bicarbonate that can permanently inactivate pepsin. It is basically the same main ingredient that is used in the heartburn and antacid medication like Alka-Seltzer. Drinking a few bottles of alkaline water per day can definitely help reduce heartburn and acid reflux. Being able to eventually get rid of your antacid medication in favor of drinking water is a possibility.
Plus, heartburn and acid reflux can develop into a deadly situation over time. If left untreated, it will eventually erode your throat enough to change the tissue of your esophagus. This is called Barrett’s Esophagus when the tissue actually develops into precancerous tissue. The chance to be diagnosed with cancer in your esophagus goes up dramatically once diagnosed with Barrett’s. All because of acid reflux and heartburn.
In addition to helping with acid reflux, drinking Waiakea helps balance the pH of the body and helps boost hydration. In the 2010 study published in The Journal of the International Society of Sports Medicine, people who drank alkaline water such as Waiakea had an improved acid-base balance and were more hydrated, compared to those drinking tap water. Plus, the electrolytes that are in all of those expensive sugary sports drinks are naturally contained in Waiakea Water, minus all the sugar.
What makes Waiakea special is the silica it contains. Waiakea, due to its alkaline properties, provides more than the recommended daily value or RDV of silica, which is 30 milligrams. A bottle of Waiakea surpasses the RDV and provides 32.4 milligrams. In 2010, a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that silica in drinking water can actually slow down the aging process by reducing the risk of cognitive decline. By consuming 10 mg/day of silica through drinking water, one can potentially reduce their risk of Alzheimer’s by 11 percent.
The Wonders of Waiakea
Hawaiians take immense pride in the unique culture the islands present and the bond which the inhabitants have with nature. In fact, Hawaiians call themselves keiki o ka ‘aina, translated as “children of the land.”
The practice of respecting the land and taking care of the environment is a big pillar of Hawaiian culture. Waiakea has worked diligently to measure and reduce the environmental impact of both its business and its products. The company has worked with The CarboNeutral Company and Ecometrica, two of the world’s leading emissions consultants to measure and reduce the environmental impact of both its business and its products to net zero.
In addition to using sustainable fresh resources in the world, using only 100% RPET bottles, and utilizing low-emission shipping, the company actively participates in reforestation initiatives. All of these efforts have led Waiakea to become the first Hawaiian bottled water company to be certified CarbonNeutral®.
Not only is Waiakea packed with life-altering benefits through its alkaline pH, but it was named the Top Volcanic Bottled Water Label by 10 Best Waters. Additionally, after only being three years old at the time, Waiakea was the most awarded beverage in all of North America in 2015. The world is starting to recognize just what Waiakea Water has to offer as a company.
In its effort to make its product as environmentally friendly as possible, the company uses sustainable packaging that won’t hurt the world around us. It uses 100 percent RPET bottles that require 85 percent less energy to manufacture. Plus, the company uses 90 percent less water in the manufacturing process. This is often something that is overlooked by those outside the bottled water industry. It can take many bottled water companies three to four times the water inside the bottles to manufacture the plastic bottles.
Waiakea bottled water, produced from the beautiful Mauna Loa volcano, is healthy, delicious, and good for you. In fact, it has a bit of a sweet taste to it without any needed sweetener, because the alkalinity gives it that special taste. The electrolytes including calcium, magnesium, and other minerals help to naturally heal the body and prolong life. Waiakea volcanic water is not only delicious and refreshing, but is created for a healthy on-the-go lifestyle from elite athletes, to working professionals, to casual joggers. Sourced from the purest environment on earth, Waiakea almost seems to have magical Hawaiian powers, but that is probably just the effect of the alkalinity. If you haven’t tried Waiakea yet, you should put that on to your “To Do” list. Your body and your health will be thanking you.
