OSI Food Solutions Expands Spanish Operations
OSI Food Solutions acquires new facility in Spain, essentially doubling chicken production operations

OSI Food Solutions Spain operates in Toledo, Spain, and it has recently increased its ability to process chicken. The company has added a new high capacity production line that makes it possible for them to produce 24,000 tons of chicken products per year. Previously, they were only able to produce 12,000 tons, so this new line considerably increases their production capacity.

With this latest expansion, OSI Food Solutions Spain is capable of producing a grand total of 45,000 tons of chicken, pork and beef products. The new production line required the company, which previously employed 140 people, to add 20 new jobs to staff the production line and other areas.  One of the new positions was for a new product development manager. The person hired for this new position represents skilled and dedicated leadership for developing new products and improving current products.

Managing Director of OSI Food Solutions Spain, José María del Río, remarked that the demand for chicken products in Spain and Portugal has been growing at a rapid pace. In the past 10 years, the demand has been increasing by six percent every year, but over the past three years, growth has climbed to eight percent annually, and Mr. del Río expects this trend to continue.

The new building addition housing the new production line measures 22,600 square feet, and it has a product development kitchen that will be used to address clients’ and consumers’ changing needs. It also contains an employee lounge, refrigerated rooms for waste container storage, a supply storage area, shipping and receiving areas and a production hall.

OSI President and Chief Operating Officer David McDonald stated that the expansion has made it possible for the company to increase its portfolio of products and encourage the growth of their foodservice and retail account services. Mr. McDonald is very happy that the company was able to hire more people and increase the number of products that they can offer.

Increasing Sustainability

Demonstrating care for the environment is significant to the people of this company, so they are encouraged to continue creating an enterprise that is sustainable as well as productive. For example, the new equipment that has just been installed in the Toledo plant lowered the company’s energy consumption by 20 percent. The facility also has a cogeneration system and refrigeration unit that allows heat recovery to take place, and this increases the company’s energy efficiency even further.

The European Agricultural Guarantee Fund granted OSI Food Solutions Spain a sum of money to complete the expansion project because the government realized that the company showed a deep commitment to sustainability, agricultural development and employment. In 2016, the company had also received an award from the Chamber of Commerce for its pledge to increase employment.

The Global Visionary Award

India’s Vision World Academy presented its Global Visionary Award to the CEO and Chairman of OSI Group Sheldon Lavin. In order to win this award, a candidate must demonstrate that he or she is a visionary who has persevered in business and succeeded in accomplishing his or her goals. In other words, the academy looks for people who have turned their dreams into a reality, and, in 2016, the academy chose Sheldon Lavin.

Global Visionary Award winner Sheldon Lavin fit the description of someone the academy wanted to honor because he arrived at OSI Group when it was only a modest meat processing company. After Mr. Lavin took charge of the company, it turned into a multi-billion dollar conglomerate that operates its business all over the world. The company currently has a presence in 17 different countries, with more than 65 facilities. OSI Group is in India, for example, because OSI-Vista Processed Foods is operating in eight different locations across the country where fruit, meat and vegetables are processed. The company also participates in joint ventures located in Taiwan, Canada, and the Philippines.

The Edward C. Jones Community Service Award

This award was named for the late Edward Jones of Jones Dairy Farm who was a model of community service. In his memory, the North American Meat Institute annually bestows this award on an individual or company that has shown that same strong commitment to the communities in which it operates. Mr. Sheldon Lavin, CEO and Chairman of OSI Group, was chosen for this award in 2016 because of his dedication to, and active participation in, charitable organizations in the Chicago metropolitan area and the international communities in which his company operates.

Mr. Lavin is a trustee for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) and he serves on the board of directors for Chicago’s Goodman Theatre and Rush University Medical Center.  He is a contributor to a number of local and national charities. Additionally, he is President and Director of The Sheba Foundation, a family charitable foundation.

The award was presented at the North American Meat Institute’s Annual Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, January 26, 2016, during the International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Awards for OSI Group

OSI Group’s facilities have received many awards since Sheldon Lavin has been leading the company. Most recently, OSI Food Solutions UK received a 2017 International Safety Award from the British Safety Council. This award recognizes a company’s commitment to good health and safety management in the workplace. This same award has been bestowed upon OSI Food Solutions UK many times, with 2017 being the eleventh time since 2006 that the facility has been recognized by the British Safety Council for excellence in health and safety management.

The British Safety Council also honored the OSI Food Solutions UK plant with the Globe of Honour Award in 2013, 2015 and 2016. This award recognizes organizations that have demonstrated excellence in environmental management.

Additionally, in 2015, the BSC also recognized OSI Food Solutions UK with the Sword of Honour, which is awarded to organizations who have demonstrated excellence in the management of health and safety risks at work.

Other awards have been awarded to OSI Group facilities across Europe in recent years. In 2017, Alpenrind-Salzburg, an OSI Group Company located in Austria, earned both a silver and bronze award at the World Steak Challenge for several of its meat items. In 2015, OSI Food Solutions Poland received first prize at the National Labor Inspectorate Awards. These awards recognize businesses that have achieved a high safety record, ensured the health of their employees, followed all legal requirements and are seen as solid and reliable employers. OSI Food Solutions Germany (Duisburg) was awarded the Prize of Honor for Food Products in North Rhine-Westphalia for 2014. The German Agricultural Society awarded OSI Food Solutions Germany (Günzburg) a Gold Medal for Product Quality in 2015 for the hamburgers produced there.

Additional awards have been bestowed upon Vista Processed Foods in India, as part of the OSI Group. Such awards range from the Confederation of Indian Industry’s Commendation Certificate for Commitment to Food Safety in 2016 to vendor of the year from two leading fast food brands that same year.

OSI Group’s Acquisitions

OSI Group was busy acquiring new properties to expand its operations in 2016. First, the company purchased a food processing facility and storage warehouse in Chicago. OSI Group also expanded more in the foreign market by purchasing Baho Food. Then, OSI Group purchased Flagship Europe from the Flagship Food Group in 2016, renaming it Creative Foods Europe in January 2018. Lastly, the company expanded its operations at its OSI Food Solutions facility in Toledo, Spain, as was described above. All of these investments were made for the purpose of giving the enterprise an increased capacity to produce food for its clients and customers all over the world.
