Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Wanda Maximoff/the Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, took some time to discuss how incredibly secretive production of Avengers: Infinity War was in the directors’ determination to prevent spoilers. (Warning: the rest of this article won’t be so careful!)
As viewers know, the movie has a shocking cliffhanger finale as the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin) fulfills his plan of wiping out half of all life in the universe with a snap of his fingers. As a result, half of the movie’s many heroes are seem crumbling to dust, aside from those like Scarlet Witch and Vision (Paul Bettany) who had perished earlier in the story.
Apparently, death scenes were filmed individually, with the cast members only told how they all fit together afterwards, with the directing team of Anthony and Joe Russo cramming them into a van for the discussion.
“They took us into a van – all of us – we were in a van with air conditioning because it was very hot and they told us how the movie was going to end and no one knew. And they were like ‘Now we’re shooting it, Go!’ and we were like ‘How are we supposed to interpret that?’”
In the past, Olsen had already mentioned that the actors were not given full scripts, but only pages that included their own lines. Even then, they apparently had “fake ending and multiple fake things” to prevent them from knowing too much.
“If you wanted to read the full script, for the majority of us, you had to go in a room with no windows, leave your phone at the door, and sit and read it fully. We couldn’t take our time at home or anything like that,” she said.
The Russos made it very clear that they wanted to keep the full story secret; the marketing also included a campaign jokingly called #ThanosDemandsYourSilence. It seems a bit paranoid, but then, some of the MCU actors have been known for letting spoilers slip out, and for a movie this massive some caution seems appropriate.
The fourth Avengers movie is even more secret,as it is less than a year away and we do not even have a title yet. Fans generally expect that it will undo Infinity War‘s many deaths, but apparently even the actors may not know how.
