Herbalife Nutrition Aids the American Red Cross


Blood Drive Support and Disaster Relief

Herbalife Nutrition recently announced that it would make another large donation of Herbalife Nutrition Protein Deluxe Bars to 120 blood donation centers throughout the United States. These blood donation centers are run by the American Red Cross, and more than 280,000 of these delicious and nutritious bars will be donated nationwide.

The retail value of the donation is half a million dollars, and this is the fourth year in a row that Herbalife Nutrition has given such a generous gift. The nutrition company, famous for Formula 1 protein shakes and Herbalife24 sports products, has a multi-decades-long tradition of pitching in to help the American Red Cross with its humanitarian efforts.

Herbalife Nutrition Protein Deluxe Bars are the perfect snack for volunteers who have just given blood. They contain 10 grams of high-quality protein and 10 grams of total carbohydrates, the perfect balance of nutrients to quickly replace what volunteers lose when they donate blood.

Herbalife Nutrition’s protein bars are also very high in riboflavin (vitamin B2) and vitamin B6. Both of these vitamins are vital for building back the red blood cells lost while giving a pint of blood. Some flavors of Herbalife Nutrition Protein Deluxe bars contain dark chocolate, which is high in iron, another important micronutrient to replace after donating iron-rich blood.

Beyond donating the protein bars to American Red Cross blood drives, Herbalife Nutrition gets involved in other ways as well. The company has hosted more than 50 blood drives at its own offices, including its corporate headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, its distribution center in Carson California, and two different innovation and manufacturing facilities in Winston Salem, North Carolina, and Lake Forest, California. There is also an Herbalife Nutrition blood mobile van that the company operates in Southern California. It is estimated that these efforts help save 25,000 lives each year.

A Community of Giving Back

Herbalife Nutrition encourages all of its employees, Independent Distributors, and customers to donate blood if they are able to. If they aren’t near one of the company’s blood donation centers, Herbalife Nutrition encourages them to go give blood at an American Red Cross blood drive in their local area.

This is a very powerful blood donation mobilizing effort, since Herbalife Nutrition has over 8,000 employees, more than three million Independent Distributors, and millions of customers. In July 2015, for example, Herbalife Nutrition recruited 25,000 blood donors from a pool of employees and Distributors at its Herbalife Nutrition Extravaganza in St. Louis, Missouri.

Herbalife Nutrition employees recognize the value of donating blood. Joel Morgan, an Assistant Medical Reviewer for Herbalife Nutrition, tries to donate blood as often as possible. With special insight from his experience in the medical field, he explains how important blood donation is and says that these blood drives make a “large and lasting impact.” George Reveles, a Facilities Coordinator for Herbalife Nutrition, describes how important it is to “pay it forward.” He has members of his own family who needed blood during a crisis.

Dr. Dana Ryan, Herbalife Nutrition’s Director of Sport Performance and Education, describes donating blood as an “essential” activity after she needed a blood transfusion after complications from surgery herself. An Herbalife Nutrition Independent Distributor and blogger in southern Florida wrote that “giving blood is an act of giving life.”

The American Red Cross can use all the help it can get in encouraging more people to donate blood at least once a year. During the last four years, there has been a decline per year of about 80,000 blood donors. The American Red Cross reports that every two seconds, someone needs blood. Just stop and think about that for a minute. That’s 43,200 people per day who need blood.

There is no doubt that donating blood saves lives, and we all need to come together to make that happen. Herbalife Nutrition does its part in recruiting new blood donors by putting the word out through its social media channels and spreading the word through its own massive network.

Herbalife Nutrtition and Missing Types Campaign

In June and July of 2018, Herbalife Nutrition participated in the American Red Cross’ Missing Types Campaign. The company removed the As, Bs, and Os from its logo to draw attention to the three major blood groups that are needed most during blood drives.

Neal Litvack, the Chief Marketing Officer for the American Red Cross, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the American Red Cross: “We are so grateful that Herbalife Nutrition has joined the Missing Types campaign to raise visibility for this critical need and to help ensure [that] hospital patients receive life-saving blood.”

Herbalife Nutrition has helped the American Red Cross with other crises as well. One example is the aftermath of the major hurricanes that hit the southeastern portion of the United States in recent years.

The Herbalife Family Foundation helped mobilize shelter volunteers and much needed supplies to the victims of Hurricane Harvey. The Herbalife Family Foundation also collected donations for displaced victims of the California wildfires. The money went directly to the American Red Cross and was used to provide shelter, warm blankets, clothes, food, and clean water to those in need.

The partnership between Herbalife Nutrition and the American Red Cross is a perfect match. Herbalife Nutrition shares many of the same principles and values of helping others that the American Red Cross is so well-known for around the world.
