Director and pop culture authority Kevin Smith announced that he has begun work on the next Jay and Silent Bob film. Smith made this announcement through Twitter earlier this week. In the post, Smith is shown working at a table with producer Jordan Monsanto, wife of Jay actor Jason Mewes. The photo was taken by Mewes. Smith also jokes with his followers that the three of them are the only people working in Hollywood during the holiday season. The upcoming sequel, entitled Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, features the loveable duo as they return to Hollywood for the first time since their last big screen adventure, 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. A synopsis of the film reveals that Jay and Silent Bob return to California in the hopes of stopping studio executives from rebooting Bluntman and Chronic, a fictional comic book series inspired by their lives. In a second Twitter post, Smith wished his fans a Happy New Year, declaring 2019 to be the year of the reboot.
Not much information has been revealed on Jay and Silent Bob Reboot yet, but Mewes and Smith will both reprise their roles of Jay and Silent Bob, respectively. Actor Brian O’Halloran, who frequently collaborates with Smith, is also expected to return for the film. O’Halloran played Dante Hicks in several of Smith’s films, most notably Clerks and Clerks II. In an interview with ComicBook.com last year, Mewes praised Smith’s script, saying that fans of the series will enjoy the upcoming entry. Speaking further, Mewes said that Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is not a true reboot of Smith’s series, which is known as the View Askewniverse. Rather, the upcoming film will serve to make fun of Hollywood reboots of popular franchises. Mewes also teased that several other actors from the original Jay and Silent Bob film would also return, but he said that Smith is keeping several parts under wraps until the film’s release.
A release date for Jay and Silent Reboot has not officially been announced yet, but Smith said that tentative plans are for a late 2019 release. The sequel is expected to begin filming in August.
