Although it was recently announced that Legion would be ending its run on FX with its upcoming third season, Marvel Television executive Jeph Loeb says that the series could return in the future. In an interview with Deadline Hollywood, Loeb said that Legion showrunner Noah Hawley originally planned for a three-season arc for the show with a beginning, middle, and end. Loeb elaborates that in Marvel’s view, the characters from Legion will live on well beyond the run of the original show. Looking at the series as just one part of a larger graphic novel, Loeb says that the show could be revived if Hawley ever felt there was a new story. Loeb’s comments are in-line with what John Landgraf, the president of FX, told reporters when announcing that season three would be the last season for Legion. In his announcement, Landgraf said that the show was not being canceled and was always intended to run for three seasons.
Legion follows the adventures of actor Dan Stevens’ character David Haller, a mutant with psychic powers. Season one centered around David trying to determine what was behind his newly acquired powers, with many thinking that the protagonist was mentally ill. Season two followed David as he fully embraced his powers, only to learn that while he was psychic, he also suffered from schizophrenia. A recent synopsis from the network says that season three will focus on the efforts of other characters to stop David, who now bears a striking resemblance to his comic counterpart Legion. Actress Rachel Keller’s Syd will hence be the main protagonist of the season as she tries to find a way to counter David’s dangerous plans.
The series recently made headlines with news that it would feature an appearance by classic X-Men leader Charles Xavier/Professor X, who will be revealed as David’s father. In the X-Men film series, the character was played to great acclaim by Sir Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy. Legion’s version of Professor X will be played by Game of Thrones actor Harry Lloyd. Stephanie Corneliussen will also join the cast as Gabrielle, David’s mother.
Season three of Legion is set to premiere on FX this June.
